What Is A TMS System For Depression?

what is TMS?

Are you suffering from depression?

Have you heard about TMS? It is short for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

What is TMS? It is a breakthrough “magnet” for cure of depression.

Why I want to share this article about TMS?

According to survey, depression is one of issues of women ages 50 and above. There are many reasons that can be attributed to this but one of the most common one is hormonal changes.

Many women who have had ongoing bouts of the blues usually relies on anti-depressant drugs. What if it doesn`t work for them anymore? The American Psychiatric Association has started recommending TMS. It is also effective for anxiety. In fact, a University of California study showed a 60% rate of remission for anxiety disorders.

So, if ever you got a stubborn case of the blues (especially during winter), consider asking your doctor about a non-invasive treatment – the TMS system – which uses powerful magnets to reboot mood!

TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) uses low-frequency magnetic fields, similar to those used in an MRI, to reset brain chemistry and improve symptoms of depression.

How does TMS work?

The magnetic pulse makes the underactive brain cells typical in depression fire thousands of times which exercises them so that they learn to start firing on their own.

Exactly what happens?

So, when you are seated, you are fitted with a helmet that contains a coil. During the treatment, you will feel repetitive tapping sensations (but with no pain) on your scalp as the targeted magnetic pulses are delivered. The 20 to 40 minute sessions occur five times per week for four to six weeks. After each session, you can immediately resume normal activities.

How successful is TMS?

One study, conducted at 22 medical centers found that TMS resulted in a total remission of symptoms for more than 32% of patients with chronic depression. Another study, involving 42 TMS clinics, found that 37% of patients experienced full remission, and 58% had significantly reduced symptoms.

“People say, You`ve given me my life back, and it is back better than it`s ever been before!” says psychiatrist Kimberly Cress, MD., founder of the Serenity TMS Center in Sugarland,Texas.

Are there any Side Effects?

Possible side effects are few and mild, including headache, scalp discomfort and lightheadedness. “Because TMS precisely targets the brain, people do not have to deal with the effects of anti-depression meds, such as sexual dysfunction,” says Dr. Cress.

Is it covered by Medical Insurance?

Many insurance companies now cover TMS fully or in part, like Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Tri-care. But check with your health provider to make sure.

Is TMS treatment only available in clinics?

Fortunately, there are already TMS available in the market, like in Amazon. But I suggest consulting first to your doctor before buying one.

Final thoughts about TMS?

Honestly, I would rather recommend TMS or transcrannial magnetic stimulation to cure depression rather than taking medications. There are lots of side effects when taking pills for depression and anxiety.

But most importantly, if ever you are suffering from depression or any of your friends or love ones, and that is the reason why you are reading this article, let me just leave you with these words: “I hope you know you are capable, brave and significant, even when it feels you are not!”

  1. Hi Hanna, thank you for this post. I’ve suffered from clinical depression for the past 12 years, im not 50 yet but is this good for younger adults? This is something I could probably really benefit from. Thanks so much for sharing.

    1. Hi Jen, thanks for your comment.
I think this would be good in any age.. It is just eliminating the idea of taking any kind of medications.
But before you try anything, please do consult your doctor first.
      All the best!

  2. Hi Hanna,

thanks for bringing such a non-toxic,non-side-effect ridden remedy for depression. I have a friend who suffers from acute depression that comes at interval but he doesn’t live in the USA, he rather lives in Asia and I have no idea if the doctors and hospitals in his country know about this TMS. I was wondering if he can just buy it off Amazon and use without a doctor’s consultation?

    1. Hi Vapz, thanks for sharing your thoughts about this article.

I understand your concern, but I still would recommend consulting a doctor before using TMS.

  3. Wow ! , A way to handle anxiety, depression and blues without taking pills. Honestly its my first time of hearing about this, most cases of anxiety and depression treatment via antidepressants as must like moving from dying pan to fire. The resultant side effect of these drugs makes them another source of concern.

I would say the inventor of this wonderful Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation machine deserve a Nobel.

    1. Hi Olanike, thank you for your comment

TMS is truly an invention worthy of a prize.  It already has helped a lot of people and will continually help more people.

      All the best!

  4. “What Is A TMS System For Depression?” Is thorough put together article, informative and educative. You have said it all: from What isTMS to how it works to How successful is TMS to where to get it to health insurance and side effects. You can’t make it more easier to understand. Thanks for sharing such a great information and I love your words of encouragement. We can do better than we can imagine!

    1. Hi jakaynigltd!  Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I am trying to make my articles precise and easy to read.

      All the best!

  5. I absolutely love this insightful article because it is full of great information. This is fascinating and interesting to me.I can boldly say this anti depression treatment is working perfectly, I have once visited my uncle and he showed me how he came across this anti depression treatment drug.the testimony was awesome to me because it helps my uncle from depression. This is an insightful article. Great read.

  6. Thanks for writing this article about TMS system for depression.there is a friend I know of that suffer from depression and if I can recall she treatment sessions vary in length depending on the TMS coil used and the number of pulses delivered but typically last around 30 – 40 minutes and she receive TMS 5 days a week.it really a serious issue she is just 52 year of age

    1. Thanks ajibola40 for sharing your thought regarding TMS.

Hopefully, that TMS treatment to your friend had been very helpful.

      All the best!

  7. Hi! Thank you for this alternative to medications. I agree with you, taking medication bring too many sides effects.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or TMS, sess low-frequency fields every where.

I’m impressed that it has be conducted at 22 medical centers.

You say that there may be side effects for using TMS. What type of side effects could I expect? Thank you.

    1. Thanks Henry for your comment.

Noted side effects so far of TMS are headache, lightheadedness, and some scalp discomfortness.  I would say these can be minor compared the side effects of the depression pills.

  8. Thank you for this unique article. I know someone who has been suffering from depression and has taken some antidepressant drugs but unfortunately, the drugs was all to no avail. Having received this information about TMS from your article, I am hopeful that the TMS will improve the condition of this patient. I will first ask her to consult her physician before purchasing the TMS. However, I would like to know how to handle any little side effects of TMS  incase the side effects tends to prolong.

    1. Hi Kenechi, thank you for your comment.

If ever, the best thing to do is really talk to a physician first before using TMS. If there will be some side effects after usage, it is also best to seek her/his doctor first.

  9. Hi, Hanna. This is something new to me. I am still wondering about magnetic fields used for depression treatment as we do not know if there will be side effects after many years on. There is also no confirmation if depression returns after one stops using TMS. It will be a powerful treatment if it is successful.

    1. Hi rmjia, thanks for your comment.

I understand your concern.  Until now, there are still ongoing studies in several parts of the world to see the effectivitiy of TMS .  But the good thing, there are already TMS available in several clinics that have shown good treatments to patients.

      All the best!

  10. It is sad to note that over 66 million women in Africa suffer from depression with minimal medical services to turn to. It affects one in every four women and though women are affected twice as more than men.
Depression impairs the ability to focus and concentrate which kills productivity at work.

Through your post, I am glad to know about TMS or transcrannial magnetic stimulation as a cure of depression better than the taking medications, and I will do my study on its usage in my community; and if possible, promote its awareness.

    1. Thanks Edgar for sharing your thoughts with regards to this article.

This is one of the reason why i shared about TMS.  It is for those people suffering depression that are taking medications (which actually cause side-effects), that there is another way of treatment – through this transcranial magnetic stimulation.

      All the best to you!

  11. It’s great to learn that you could make intrusive and negative thoughts go away by trying out TMS. My colleague talked about how his cousin is showing signs of negativity on social media, and he wants to help out. Maybe he should pitch this idea to him when they meet again!
