Finding Your Life Purpose When You Are Over 50

“That fact that you aren’t where you want to be, should be enough motivation.”- anonymous

When you realized you are already past midlife, it is not unusual to contemplate on your life if you have live your purpose. You may have worked for years on a job, or have been taking care of someone most of your lives, you may be retired or almost retiring. You may have reinvented your life several times and never stayed stuck long enough on one thing to make you successful. Well, the good news, is that it is never too late, your life is still far from over.

If you WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOUR LIFE PURPOSE IS, ask these 5 questions:

1. WHO AM I?

What is your name? Simple as that. Your name that people call you, your family and friends call you, your love ones call you. What is your name?

2. WHAT DO YOU DO?

What do you love to do? Do you love to cook? To write? Do you like to work with numbers? To speak? To teach? To assist or help others? What do you really love to do? Right now, if you can focus, if there`s really one thing you would like to do, and you know that you are qualified and really know how to do it, what would it be?

3. WHO DO YOU DO IT FOR?

The thing you love to do, who do you do it for? Who are these people that you work for, or you deal with. Who are these that surrounds you because of what you do?

4. WHAT DO THESE PEOPLE WANT OR NEED FROM YOU?

So these people that you do it for need something or want something from you, that is why you do it for them. For example, if they are students, the need to learn something from you. If they are patients, they need treatment from you. What do they want from you.

5. HOW DO THEY CHANGE AS A RESULT OF WHAT YOU HAVE GIVEN THEM?

Think of the transformation as a result to what you have given to this people. Did they learn something from you? Did they heal because you treated them? Did they become a better person because you motivated them? Were they inspired by your writings? Did they enjoy your entertainment? What happened to them when you did what they come to you for?

If you have answered all these questions, put them all together, and you come up with your life purpose. These simple questions seem too easy to answer, but if you are unsure of your answer, you may revisit yourself and probably contemplate more to come up with a realization so you will know your purpose. As i`ve said, it is never too late. It is always good to know what is your purpose, so you`ll know how are you going to spend the remaining of your fulfilled life.

Have you find your life purpose? Tell me your thoughts..

  1. Great questions Hanna, particularly in
    4. WHAT DO THESE PEOPLE WANT OR NEED FROM YOU?
    5. HOW DO THEY CHANGE AS A RESULT OF WHAT YOU HAVE GIVEN THEM?
These are all very thought provoking and great to answer (even for a male in 40s like me). Thank you so much for sharing.

    1. Thanks John. Isn`t it funny that those are just simple questions to think, but actually will make you realize that you really have a committed purpose for people or things around you. And once you find your answer? That will be one of the A-HA moments.. thanks again..

  2. Good article, Hannah! Although I’m male and still under 50 I found some truth within your post for myself. To find once life purpose is probably one of the hardest thing to do. If you detach “life purpose” from “making money” you’re on a good way. It’s the one thing you still want to do, even if you had to pay for it.

    1. Thanks Felix for your comment. Finding life purpose is the truth in all people, male or female, young or old. And you are definitely right, if you know your purpose detaching yourself from anything, even money, you know that you`re on your way to a good life.

  3. Both my wife and I are over fifty and we have found a new lease of life which hopefully will carry us through to our golden years. We are both love challenges learning new things and meeting like minded people world wide.

My wife writes poetry and has a novel published on kindle amazon. She is busy with her second novel. As for myself I graduated with a BA Degree in Political Science and German at the age of 64.

We are both health fanatics, we love our daily gym, socialise with our friends, travel regularly and can honestly say we are enjoying our life to the full.

    1. Thanks Richar for your sharing your thoughts. So glad to know that you and your wife had found you true purpose. This is living the real life which you are created for. Cheers!

  4. I love this idea of breaking down who you are and what is your purpose. It’s a real inside look at ourselves which we don’t always stop to do. We are all something to someone but we should also be someone to ourselves.

    1. Thanks Sue for your thoughts. It is definitely true.. i liked the way you put it: “we are all something to someone.. and someone to ourselves.”

  5. Hi Hanna, Those are great questions to ask oneself. I asked myself those questions and was quite surprised by my answers. I agree with what Sue said in the previous comment “We are all something to someone but we should also be someone to ourselves”. Very thought provoking!
